Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin, also known as submental fat, to improve the appearance of a “double chin.”
Kybella®’s active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
When injected into the submental fat, deoxycholic acid destroys the membrane of fat cells, causing them to rupture and release their contents. The body’s natural processes then gradually clear away the destroyed fat cells, resulting in a reduction in the appearance of a double chin.
The Kybella® treatment typically involves a series of injections, customized to the amount of fat and desired outcome. Most patients require two to four treatments, spaced about a month apart, for optimal results.
After the injections, you may experience temporary swelling, bruising, or numbness in the treated area, which usually subsides within a few days to a week.
